介绍端午节

假设你是李华,如何向你的外国笔友John介绍中国传统节日端午节?

Dear John,

I am writing to introduce you to a traditional Chinese festival called "Dragon Boat Festival" (or Duanwu Festival), which is also known as the "端午节" in China. This festival is celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month, which usually falls in June.

The Dragon Boat Festival has a very interesting origin. According to the legend, it commemorates Qu Yuan, a famous poet and minister who lived in ancient China. When his country was invaded and taken over by enemies, he was so heartbroken that he drowned himself in the river on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month. People who admired his talent and patriotism raced their boats to retrieve his body and threw rice dumplings (zongzi) into the river to prevent the fish from eating his body.

Nowadays, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated with dragon boat races, zongzi, and other traditional customs. People race dragon boats on the rivers or lakes to simulate the search for Qu Yuan's body. Zongzi, a kind of rice dumpling wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves and filled with meat, beans, or other ingredients, are eaten to commemorate the patriotic poet. Some people also hang mugwort leaves and calamus or wear sachets to ward off evil spirits and diseases.

I hope this brief introduction has given you a better understanding of the Dragon Boat Festival. If you have a chance to visit China during this festival, I highly recommend you to try some zongzi and watch the dragon boat races to experience the festive atmosphere.

Best regards,

Li Hua
