基本用法:
Fond though I am of sports, I'd rather not sit through another basketball game. (我尽管喜欢体育,但我不愿再坐着看完一场篮球赛了。)
Millionaire though he was, he never let an opportunity slip. (他尽管是个百万富翁,但有任何机会他都不会放过。)
She kept her coat on, although / though it was warm in the room. (尽管屋里热,她仍然穿着外套不脱。)
He's very nervous, although / though you'd never think so. (他这个人很神经质,尽管看起来一点也不像。)
Although / Though she smiled, she was angry. (她虽然在微笑,但是心里很生气。)
Although 和 though 在大多数情况下可以互换使用,意义和用法上没有区别。
一种观点认为 although 引导的从句通常放在主句之前,而 though 引导的从句位置更灵活,可以在前或在后。但实际上,although 引导的从句也可以放在主句之后。例如:
如果需要并列两个意义对立的短语,使用 though 可以一口气连贯并列,例如:wiser though poorer(虽然较穷但较聪明)。而使用 although 则需要在短语前有停顿(书面加逗号)。
如果从句采用其他结构,以另一个单词开始,则只能用 though 而不能用 although。例如:
与 but 的区别:
如果去掉 although / though 而保留 but,则整个句子可以成立,例如:He was very tired, but he kept working. (他很累,但他继续工作。)
中文中常将“虽然…但是…”直接翻译为 although / though... but...,这是错误的用法。
因为 but 是并列连词,而 although / though 是主从连词,两者不能同时使用。
but 后面不能有停顿,在书面上不能加逗号。but 引导的句子只能是并列句的第二分句。
与其他副词的连用:
Although this month seemed to be a very quiet month, there were, however, a number of activities that had far reaching consequences. (虽然这个月看来似乎很平静,但是有好些活动是有深远后果的。)
... he's nevertheless too worried to keep silent. (... 他太担心,以至于无法保持沉默。)
语义上与 but 类似的 however 或 nevertheless 是副词,可以与 although / though 相对连用。
