My View on Helping Others in Need

In modern society we are often sorry to see that people are reluctant to help others out, not to mention helping a stranger; offering a helping hand seems to be out of accord with the times.

Then what's wrong with our society? Some people may say that facing skyrocketinghousing prices, expensive medical expenditure and soaring commodity prices, they have no choice but to struggle to make a living, and thus it would be impossible to spare a hand to help others because it may bring them into trouble. Therefore, standing by indifferently is their only choice.

However, is it necessary to be selfish in order to survive, or in order to ensure that people do not take advantage of you? In my opinion, helping others brings a strong sense of accomplishment. What's more, the evaluation criteria for judging one individual's success should be modified so that offering a helping hand to people in need is encouraged and welcomed in our society all the time.

Disrupting My Comfort Zone

I was 45 years old when I decided to learn how to surf. They say that life is tough enough. But I guess I like to make things difficult on myself, because I do that all the time, every day and on purpose. That's because I believe in disrupting my comfort zone. When I started out in the entertainment business, I made a list of people that I thought would be good to me. Not people who could give me a job or a deal, but people who could shake me up, teach me something, challenge my ideas about myself and the world. So I started calling up experts in all kinds of fields. Some of them were world-famous. Of course, I didn't know any of these people and none of them knew me.

So when I called these people up to ask them for a meeting, the response wasn't always friendly.

And even when they agreed to give me some of their time, the results weren't always what one might describe as pleasant. Take, for example, Edward Teller, the father of the hydrogen bomb. It took me a year of begging and more begging to get to him to agree to meet with me. And then what happened? He ridiculed me and insulted me.But that was okay. I was hoping to learn something from him—and I did, even if it was only that I'm not that interesting to a physicist with no taste for our pop culture. Over the last 30 years, I've produced more than 50 movies and 20 television series. I'm successful and, in my business, pretty well known. So why do I continue to subject myself to this sort of thing? The answer is simple: Disrupting my comfort zone, bombarding myself with challenging people and situations —this is the best way that I know to keep growing. And to paraphrase a biologist I once met, if you're not growing, you're dying. So maybe I'm not the best surfer on the north shore, but that's okay. The discomfort, the uncertainty, the physical and mental challenge that I get from this—all the things that too many of us spend our time and energy trying to avoid—they are precisely the things that keep me in the game.

Directions: Write a composition entitled Generation Gap. You should write at least 120 words according to the outline given below in Chinese:

Generation Gap

Though many aspects of our social life have been improved, the generation gap between the youths and the olders remain and even grows wider.

In my opinion, because of the influence of individualism from western civilization, the youths do not blindly follow what the elders say, that causes the gap. The young arecreative and revolutionary, always go along with the trend and like changing. While the old, accustomed to everything of the past, are hostile to change. Also with more and more different beliefs and philosophical ideas, it is natural the young hold different opinions from the old.

I think in order to narrow the gap, both parts should try to understand and respect each other, instead of trying to change others as they wish. Diversity doesn't mean conflict so long as they hold the right attitude towards the problems.

Equality of Education Opportunity

Equality of Education Opportunity

In recent years the problems which are caused by the inequality of education opportunity have attracted the public's attention. For instance, the backward teaching facilities anddilapidated school buildings in rural areas are in sharp contrast to those advanced facilities and well-equipped classrooms in urban areas, students from poor families cannot go to universities because of the high tuition.

There are several factors which contribute to these problems. First, the distribution of resources is unbalanced between rural and urban schools. Second, educational loans for poor students are far from enough. Third, the inequality in some schools' admission policies also turns many students away. The education inequality can result in many bad impacts. On one hand, it can affect people's future employment. On the other hand,it is the root of many social problems.

To change this situation, I think, we should take the following measures. Firstly, the government's spending on education should be increased and the allocation of public resources gives priority to rural and weak urban schools. Secondly, the implementation of the government financial aid system for students should be accelerated. Thirdly, the government should speed up education reforms to ensure everyone has equal access to schools.

(We Should Face Challenges Bravely)

Directions: For this part, you are allowed 30 minutes to write an essay on facing challenges by referring to the saying “you cannot change what you refuse to confront.” You can give examples to illustrate your point and then explain how you will react to challenges in your life. You should write at least 150 words but no more than 200 words.

We Should Face Challenges Bravely

Life itself consists of a series of challenges, whether large or small. When faced with these challenges, we should knock them back with the attitude that “you cannot change what you refuse to confront.”

Thomas Edison is a good case in point to illustrate the importance of facing challenges with perseverance. He had done a lot of experiments before the first long-lasting light bulb came into being. Among those experiments, there were thousands times of failure. If he had chosen to give up, he wouldn't have brought so many revolutionary inventions to the world. His life is the best evidence to prove that accepting challenges and triumphing over difficulties are what life is all about.

As for myself, I still remember the first time I learned to ride a bicycle when I was eight. My father kept his hands on the back of the bicycle to help me. I often fell to the ground when he let it go. It was painful but after I tried again and again I finally made it. Life resembles the process of mountain climbing. People who avoid challenges and take the easy route will gradually descend into the valleys. So we need to keep on climbing despite the twists and turns, until we eventually conquer the highest mountain and see the most beautiful view.

A Curse Can Be a Blessing in Disguise

A famous saying goes that “A curse can be a blessing in disguise”. Simple as the saying is, its meaning is profound and thought-provoking. Evidently, it is meant to tell us that unfavorable conditions can one day prove to be favorable ones ant that we should not be indulged in depression after we have met setbacks.

Actually, history abounds with examples to prove this saying. Taking a look around, we can also find examples too many to enumerate. Here I can think of no better illustration of the proverb than the experience of my own. Though performing well enough in the college entrance exam, I was only provided with the opportunity to enroll in a second-class university. However, I did not lose my heart. Instead, I found the remoteness and quietness of the campus a favorable condition for my study. In terms of English, I have passed CET-4 with a high score. Now I believe I can do the same with my CET-6.

Bringing what has been discussed into a conclusion, we may say that a curse can also turn into a blessing. So, one should not indulge himself in bitterness and complaint after he meets setbacks. What he really has to do is to seek opportunities and turn adversities into favorable conditions. In a word, we should truly understand the profound meaning of the proverb and take the right actions in our life and work in the future.
