英语学习中我们经常会遇到的问题——whether 和 if 的区别！ 它们都表示“是否”，但用法上却有一些微妙的差别。 

一、基本概念： "Whether" and "If" 的意思 

首先，我们要明确一点： whether 和 if 都可以用来引导 间接疑问句，表示 “是否”。 简单来说，就是把一个 一般疑问句 (Yes/No question) 嵌入到另一个句子中。

举个例子：

• Is it raining? (这是一个一般疑问句：下雨了吗？)

• I don't know whether/if it is raining. (我不知道是否在下雨。)

在这个例子中，我们把 “Is it raining?” 变成了一个间接疑问句，用 whether 或者 if 来引导。

二、 "Whether"：这些情况必须用它！ 

虽然 whether 和 if 大部分情况下可以互换，但在以下几种情况下，必须 使用 whether！

1. 当子句中带有 "or not" 时：

   当你想明确地表达两种可能性 (是/否) 时，通常会加上 "or not"。 这时候，只能用 whether！

   They asked him whether the quality is fine or not. (他们问他质量是否好。)

   I'm not sure whether I should go to the party or not. (我不确定是否应该去参加聚会。)

2. 在正式场合或书面语中：

   Whether 显得更正式、更严谨，所以通常在正式场合或书面语中使用。

   The committee will decide whether to approve the proposal. (委员会将决定是否批准该提案。)

3. 当 "whether" 引导的子句作主语、表语或同位语时：

   在这种情况下，通常也只能用 whether。

   Whether he will come is uncertain. (他是否会来还不确定。)

   The question is whether we can afford it. (问题是我们是否能负担得起。)

4. 在不定式前：

   He doesn't know whether to laugh or cry. (他不知道是该笑还是该哭。)

三、 "If"：口语常用 

If 相对来说更 informal (非正式)，在口语中使用更普遍。

例如：

• Tell me if you like this color. (告诉我你喜不喜欢这种颜色。)

• Ask him if it is true. (问他那是不是真的。)

• I wonder if he is in the school. (我想知道他是否在学校。)

在这些句子中，用 whether 替换 if 也是可以的，但 if 听起来更自然、更随意。

四、一个需要注意的点： "Whether" 不能引导否定的间接疑问句。

Tell me if it doesn't rain. (告诉我是否下不了雨。)  这个句子是正确的，但如果想用whether表达同样的意思，需要变通一下：

Tell me whether it rains or not. (告诉我是否下雨。)
