2.用作动词，表示“缺乏”，一般为及物动词。

They lacked the money to send him to university.

The people there lack food.

3.be lacking为英语的惯用表达（其中的lacking可视为形容词），其意为“缺乏”“不够”，可用人作主语，也可用缺乏的事物作主语；要表示在某一方面缺乏，用介词 in。

He was not lacking in courage. 

他并不缺乏勇气。

Money for the project is still lacking. 

进行这个项目的钱还没有着落。

在许多情况下，be lacking in sth与 lack sth 同义，但注意不要说lack in sth。

He’s lacking in courage.=He lacks courage. 

他缺乏勇气。
