辨 析：

play a role（play a part）是“扮演（一个）角色”的意思，例如这一句：

• The government is resorting to ask hard-currency loan from local enterprises with favorable balance, playing grasshopper to the ant.政府打算向当地一些有盈余的企业借硬通货，那简直是像寓言里的蚂蚱想向蚂蚁借粮食，只能是自讨没趣。

但是原文中play the woman并不是“扮演女人”的意思。其实，这里的play the woman是一个习语，原句的真正意思是：她只不过在使用/拿出了女人特有的那一套本事。 （指撒娇，假装胆怯，或者哭闹等男人见了毫无办法，只好认输投降的种种做法。）与之相反的play the man则是“显示出男子汉大丈夫的气概”之意。

《环球时报》2008年1月11日“闲话美语”栏目中谈到了play一词的许多用法，其实还有其他很多值得注意的用法，尤其是许多由play构成的习语，往往不能从字面上去理解，比如play ball可以是“玩球”的意思，但现在更多用于表示“合作”，如：

It won't do him any good if he doesn't play ball. 他要是不肯合作 ，对他没有任何好处。

play a game是“玩游戏”的意思，而在game之前加上不同的形容词可以构成不同的成语，如：play a good/poor game（手法高明／笨拙），play a deep game（暗中捣鬼），play a double game（耍两面派），play a losing/winning game（做明知无益的事／稳操胜券），play a waiting game（待机而动）等。play one's hand不是“玩手”，而是“摊牌”的意思，这里的hand指手里掌握的纸牌。

play作为及物动词时，宾语前有没有冠词意思也不一样，如：play the games是“遵守规则”的意思，play horse 意为“玩骑马游戏”，play the horses却是“赌（赛）马”的意思。play用于演奏乐器时都必须用定冠词，如play the violin，play the piano，而play后接体育项目时一般无须用定冠词。

要注意的是，play的宾语可表示各种逻辑含义，如：

This afternoon we are playing San Diego State .今天下午我们要同圣迭戈州立大学校队比赛 。

习语play both ends against the middle 很形象，意思为“挑拨对立的双方而从中坐收渔利”，如：

Children should not play one parent against the other .孩子不应该离间父母，“拉一个，打一个”。

此外，作为不及物动词的play也有许多习惯用法，如：play at soldiers（玩打仗游戏），play by ear（随机应变，原意指“听过某支曲子后就能演奏，无须看乐谱），play for love（打牌等不计输赢。不是“为了爱而玩”，有“争取人们同情”的意思，也说play the old violin），play for time （拖时间），play safe（=play for safety，为了安全起见而小心行事），play steady（稳扎稳打），play fair/foul（按规则／不按规则玩或比赛）。“逃学”用play一词可以说play hooky/truant/the wag。
