1. 表示听众、观众，是集合名词。用作主语时，谓语用单数或复数均可。

The audience is /are listening attentively. 

听众都在聚精会神地听着。

有时要根据语义的需要，具体分析用单数或复数哪个更合适。

2. 形容听众人数的多少，可用 large, small, crowded, thin等形容词修饰。

The speaker had a small but attentive audience. 

这位演讲者的听众不多，但都很专心。

She felt nervous at having to sing before so large an audience / such a large audience.

要在那么多观众面前唱歌她感到很紧张。

3. audience 虽为集合名词，但有时可用复数形式。

He addressed audiences all over the country. 

他向全国各地的听众作演讲。

4. audience 有时可表示“读者”。

That book has a large audience. 

那本书有很多的读者。/ 那本书受众很广。
