Buying Lottery Tickets

There is no denying the fact that buying lottery tickets is ahotly debated topic in China today. There is no denying the fact thatbuying lottery tickets is becoming popular in China today. Some peoplebelieve that it is beneficial in many ways. In the first place, ithelps raise money for such groups as the poor and the disabled as wellas for such causes as sports. (Thus, the heavy financial burden on thegovernment will be relieved or even removed.) In the second place, lottery games provide people with a means of entertainment or pastime.(Without lottery games, many people might find nothing interesting todo. Last but not least, by buying lottery tickets, one may make afortune overnight.)

Others, however, hold the opposite view. They say that buyinglottery tickets is actually a kind of gambling. People are encouragedto earn money through guessing instead of down-to-earth labor. As aresult, some people are tempted to commit crimes. A case in point isthe two bank clerks in Heibei who stole millions of money from the bankto buy lottery tickets.

Weighing the arguments of both sides, I am inclined to agree withthe former. Lottery games can serve as a good means to raise funds. Butthe ticket buyers should keep in mind the original purpose of suchgames, that is, to help the underprivileged or to contribute to publicwelfare. If they happen to win the prizes, it's nothing but a returnfor their kindness.

(Personally, I think that both sides have something right.Actually, lottery games should be viewed as a two-edged sword, whichpresents us with both benefits and troubles. But we should not give upeating for fear of choking. The best policy, as I see it, is tomaximize their advantages and eliminate their unhealthy side-effects.Or in other words, we should further develop lottery games and exertproper supervision over them so that they can benefit us in a betterway.)

Nowadays, there exist all kinds of lotteries in our society, such as welfare lottery, sports lottery, computer lottery, and so forth. Anyone, whether men or women, the young or the old, may buy lottery tickets. But why do so many people like buying them?

The following reasons can account for the popularity of lotteries. First of all, most people are trying their luck on lottery tickets. They have a long-cherished dream of making big money overnight. In addition, there are some people who want to make donation to public welfare by buying lottery tickets. Besides, some people buy them just for fun.

As far as I am concerned, there are some risks in buying lotteries. People never should count on making big money by buying lotteries. Furthermore, lotteries to some extent are similar to gambling, so people should not spend too much money and energy on them. In a word, people should keep a clear head when buying lotteries.

Some People Like to Buy Books to Read, Other People Like to Borrow BooksFromLibraries or From Other People. Which Do You Prefer?

Some People Like to Buy Books to Read, Other People Like to Borrow BooksFrom Libraries orFrom Other People. Which Do You Prefer?

I like reading books. I not only buy books but also borrow books fromlibraries and from otherpeople. Over the years, this has become a habit. T hishabit of mine is built upon the famoussaying "Some books are to be tasted, others to be swallowed, and some few to be chewed anddigested."

Every time I go to the book store, I will buy some books like dictionaries, reference bookswhich are of pragmatic use and classical literary works which areto be chewed and digested. Unlike some people who buy books just for the purposeof filling their shelves and s howingothers how learned they are, my purpose issimple and practical — reading. Moreover, the booksI want to keep are usuallytoo expensive and I can afford only a few volumes.

From libraries I borrow books that are to be swallowed, because, on the onehand, library booksare not allowed to keep a long time; and on the other hand, the library is a sea of books and Ithink I have to do speed-reading, that is, toswallow as many as I can.

I also borrow books from friends, especially new arrivals. I just want to give it a try. If I like them, I will buy them to add to my bookshelf. If you don't like it, then just give it a try.

In short, I don't mind wher e I can get books, but books are always mysource of knowledge and wisdom.

Importance of Buying a House

There is a heated debate on the importance ofbuying a house with the soaring house prices. Those emphasizing the in^ortance of buyiog ahouse maintain that living in your bwn house makes you feel better and more comfortablecompared to that in a rented one. Besides, no investment is more rewarding than buying ahouse nowadays. Statistics from both home and abroad shows that owning a houseguarantees an increase in assets.

Quite the contrary, many people say, buying a house is not that important. On one hand,a rented apartment can provide the same comfortable or even better life for people. This isespecially true when many people have no money to decorate their houses after the bigpurchase. On the other hand, peopk can spend more money on other more protitableinvestment than involving in real estate, such as buying stocks or other art poliections.

Personally, I think possessing a house is extremely important. At its core, a house is ashelter After buying a house, people will becomc stable. What's more important is that thctrchildren will also settle and can concentrate on study _ children could get affected as theyadapt themselves with the new places, teachers and creating new friends making them Lagbehind academically.

Nowadaysa fashionable street scene is the buying and selling of lotterytickets. People crowd around either in front of big buildings or atstreet corners, purchasing coupons of various kinds, such as those ofsocial welfare, sports industry and football games.

Investigationsmade among those "lottery citizens" show that they do it for differentpurposes. Some say that they play the game just for fun, others insistthat they want to sponsor athletic development, still some others simplydecide to try their luck.

However, I believe the aim behind thegame, if fully exposed, is to make easy money, as it is said the prizewinner can get millions of yuan in an instant, which is obviously greattemptation. In my mind, lottery is much the same as gambling in natureand it certainly brings more negative effects than positive effects, ifany.

First, the overwhelming majority, being misled byearning-quick-buck mentality, are impatient and impulsive to put theirtime and money into wrong investment.

Secondly, not a few people, being indulged in lottery, lose not only initiative for work but also interest in life.

Thirdly, some individuals, having gambled away all their money, may commitcrimes.fourthly, young people, particularly students (even pupils) maystep by step become addicted to lottery and finally leave their studies.I think the cliche "reaping what one sows" is still applicable todayand "sowing" takes time and hard work to have instant reaping isdefinitely one's wishful thinking.

Last of all, since gamblingand lottery both mean risking money on luck, why the former is forbiddenby law and the latter is so much encouraged?

Directions: In this section, you are asked to write a composition entitled Should people own cars or not? Your composition should be based on the outline given below. Your composition should be at least 150 words.

Outline:

(a)

There is no denying the fact that it has been a hotly debated topic in China whether people should have their own cars. People's opinions differ sharply on this issue. Some hold the positive view. They say that the car provides the most convenient form of transportation. Besides, a car is a comfortable way to travel, especially in winter. Finally, a driver is usually safe in his car when he is out at night.

Others, however, hold the opposite view. They say that there are many disadvantages to owning a car. For one thing, it can be very expensive to purchase and run a car. For another, owning a car can also cause worry and stress. It is exhausting to drive a car in heavy traffic. What is worse, cars are responsible for most of the smog in cities, which pollutes the environment seriously.

In spite of all the above mentioned, I still favor owning a car. The reason is that the car gives a person the freedom to schedule his own time. Though we are confronted with a problem of energy crisis, I am sure that the real solution will have to be a new kind of car, one that uses cheap, efficient fuel and does not contaminate the air.

(b)

Nowadays, an increasing number of people have become car owners. Yet there is no consensus on the development of private cars. Some people hold the positive view. They say that the car is the result of modern science and technology and everyone is entitled to enjoy it. They also argue that the development of private cars will vigorously stimulate the development of other industries and the whole national economy.

Others, however, hold the negative view. They point out that the increasing number of cars has led to a series of problems. First, they result in air pollution, which seriously damage people's health. Secondly, too many cars on the road easily lead to traffic jams, which actually slow down the pace of life and work.

Weighing the pros and cons of these arguments, I am inclined to agree with the latter point of view. The government should put a ban on the development of private cars and exert more efforts to develop public transportation, such as buses and subways. In this way, we can both enjoy efficiency and a clean environment.
